What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's Disease is a progressive movement disorder that is caused by a degradation of an area of the brainstem called the Substantia Nigra that is responsible for making the neurotransmitter, Dopamine. This causes less Dopamine to be produced and leads to difficulty with movement. It causes you to have poor balance, to become stiff, have smaller movements and frequently causes your extremities to tremor. It is a motor and sensory disease.

Motor- you exhibit smaller, slower motor movements.

Sensory- your brain is not accurately assessing that your movements are becoming smaller and slower which makes it difficult to correct yourself. Many people do not even realize that their movements are becoming smaller.

The Bad news - Parkinson's is a progressive disease and there is no cure. That means that it is going to get worse.

The Good news - research shows that exercise along with medical management may slow movement deterioration and possibly slow the progression of Parkinson's Disease.

When it comes to Parkinson's, the right kind of exercise matters.

The LSVT BIG® Program provides specific exercises and treatment with the goal of normalizing movement quality, speed and amplitude. It has been researched and along with medical management, proven effective at helping Parkinson's Patients walk faster with longer steps, increase trunk rotation, improve balance and quality of life. The LSVT BIG program can help to improve fine motor activities (writing, buttoning  buttons) functional movements (rolling in bed, standing up) and improve daily activities (getting dressed, bathing).

The LSVT BIG®  Program can only be delivered by Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists who have received this additional training and are Certified.
